Fanny Kogut Millstein was born on February 13, 1918, in Brooklyn, New York, the middle child in a family of three children. Her parents had emigrated from Poland and, like many others, they arrived in America with little more than a strong desire to make a new live for themselves.
Following her graduation from high school, Fanny went to work as a secretary. At that time she met her future husband, Jack H. Milstein, who was working by day and studying at night for a degree in accounting at City College of New York. Shortly after their marriage in 1938, Fanny and Jack Millstein moved to Jeannette, Pennsylvania. It was here in 1943 that Jack Millstein formed his own business, J. H. Millstein Company, which began as a manufacturer of glass products and eventually moved into real estate holdings and development. The newly-weds established a life-time residence in Westmorland County and raised their four children. For the next fifty years both of them were active participants in local civic organizations and charitable causes. They were among the founders of Temple Emanuel (now Congregation Emanu-El Israel) where Fanny was very active in the Temple Sisterhood.
Fanny Millstein never had the opportunity to attend college because here immigrant parents could not afford to send her, and the lack of a college education was here biggest regret. Aside from her family, books became her passion. She read constantly and strongly emphasized the need for all aspects of learning to her children and twelve grandchildren.
A talented singer and story teller with an excellent sense of humor, she had a story or joke for every situation and always used them to instruct while entertaining her children. Her family will always remember fondly the importance she attached to every occasion such as birthdays, special accomplishments, or graduations. Her family was gratified that before her death, she was able to attend the wedding of her first granddaughter.
When Fanny Millstein died on December 3, 1988, her family and friends felt a deep void, for she had been an inspiring, thoughtful and compassionate person to everyone around her. Given her love for books and education, Jack Millstein, Sr. and his family strongly believe that the Library at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg is a perfect choice for her memorial.
The family of Fanny Milstein dedicated the Milstein Library in her memory with an abundance of love and pride.
